5 Human Office Design Features

It is good to know what human office design considerations are in vogue. These are those designs that have proved to increase employee engagement; hence, maximise their happiness.

Office design should consider the needs and experiences of employees. Also, it should incorporate the style and ethos of the company. A decent office is one in which employees can walk and meet freely. While it is acceptable to have a quiet office environment, some spaces should be allocated for speaking loudly and performing noisy operations.

According to Blumenfeld:

Workplaces should flex to provide a variety of spaces and destinations for workers to inhabit that promote movement throughout the day. While many companies are doing a good job of incorporating some of these elements into their workplace design, there’s a need for more awareness and implementation of this way of thinking holistically about the workplace.

Let us look at some of the best practices in this industry of enhancing ergonomics.

1. Wireless Workstations

Cabling from desktop computers and other office equipment tends to clutter the work surface. A lot of wires tends to create a feel and look of disorganisation. So, it is good to eliminate wires as much as possible. You can replace wired mouse and keyboard with their wireless counterparts. Also, you can create openings on the worktable and cubicle walls through which wires can connect with the power source. The employee should see less of wiring.

2. Nature Indoors

You can import the feel and look of outside inside. Thus, you can insert live plants into pots of water and bring them inside the office to grow and beautify the environment. The artwork and fabric of the office should incorporate the natural flora patterns. Also, you can insert panels of reclaimed wood and flooring of concrete render. This practice creates a feeling of comfort and nature.

Perhaps Google demonstrates how they bring nature into office work:

The idea is simple. Instead of constructing immoveable concrete buildings, we’ll create lightweight block-like structures which can be moved around easily as we invest in new product areas. ...Large translucent canopies will cover each site, controlling the climate inside yet letting in light and air. With trees, landscaping, cafes, and bike paths weaving through these structures, we aim to blur the distinction between our buildings and nature.

3. Multipurpose Workstation

The bench has been replacing cubicles, but it seems non-assigned seating is gaining popularity. The design should create a single space that can serve different functions. Also, some organisations like Google are adopting oval-shaped desks, which serve as a rendezvous for around six people. Additionally, designers are looking to incorporate tables whose height you can vary during standing meetings.

4. Areas Allocated to Lounge

Top-performing organisations like Apple and Google are making their workstations more flexible. Thus, they are increasingly adopting a wireless technology, which is light and powerful to reduce the rigidity of the work space. This design can arouse relaxed cooperation; hence, making the office more enjoyable and comfortable.

5. Colour Layout

You can rearrange the layout of your workspace with colour. A clever colour layout can trick the worker into thinking that space is neat and colourful. Hence, do not underestimate the role of colour in making employees more creative, happy and productive. Thus, you can integrate different colours into office furniture and accessories.

In summary, you can cleverly rearrange the layout of your office using different colours for office accessories and furniture. Be sure to include sufficient natural daylight. Also, your workstation should be free of any form of clutter, including wires. It should also serve different functions.
