Architect Registration Board.

ARB was instituted by Parliament in 1997 to govern the architects’ profession in the UK.

It is a self-governing, public interest organisation governing architects to ensure that an excellent standard of the profession is consistently developed to the advantage of the society and architects alike.

ARB duties are included in the 1997 Architects Act, and comprise six main areas:

Prescribing – or ‘recognising’ – the capacities needed to become an architect

Retaining the UK Register of Architects

Guaranteeing architects satisfy ARB criteria for conduct and practice

Examining complaints about an architect’s behaviour or proficiency

Ensuring only people on ARB Register offer architectural services

Serving as the UK’s Responsible Authority for architects

ARB work is supervised by a board of 15 members.

Seven members are architects elected by profession, and the remaining eight are members of the public (lay members) selected by the Privy Council.
