British Institute of Interior Design

The British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) is the pre-eminent expert association for UK interior designers.

The BIID’s expanding national and global membership represents both residential and commercial sectors, from heritage to cutting edge. In addition to uncompromising admission requirements which evaluate experience, training and professionalism, BIID affiliates are required to continue their professional advancement to guarantee continued expertise in the design process, practice and governing matters.

The BIID is the unique professional organisation for interior designers which have been granted the prestigious and precious accolade of Institute status by the Minister of State.

The BIID is committed to promoting and bolstering creativity and proficiency in the field of interior design by facilitating best practice, efficient expert support, growth opportunities and education.

History

The British Institute of Interior Design was established in 1965 as the Interior Decorators and Designers Association (IDDA). In 2001, the IDDA was merged with the worldwide recognised International Interior Design Association UK Chapter (IIDA) to create the British Interior Design Association (BIDA). The Secretary of State acknowledged the BIDA as the pre-eminent organisation in the field in 2009 and allowed Institute status, so it became the British Institute of Interior Design.

In 2015, the BIID celebrated 50 years as an organisation devoted to the interior design trade, making it the UK’s oldest licensed body serving only interior designers.
